If you want to raise your storytelling to new heights…
…then watch Jim Henson’s ‘The Storyteller’ now.
It’s a true masterclass in how to tell a story.
The script gushes with wit and character. And the late John Hurt as the vagabond Storyteller simply drips with charisma.
It’s a must-watch if you want to improve your story-writing skills.
I can’t recommend it enough.
Each episode spotlights a folk tale from around the world.
One episode is about a soldier who gets the upper hand on Death. Only for his trick to backfire.
Here’s what happens…
A soldier tries to save himself and those he cares about from Death.
And he manages to capture Death in a magical sack.
At first it’s all sunshine and roses.
Until the old, the weary, and very sick are stuck suffering. Unable to get relief from death.
The soldier realises his mistake.
He lets Death go.
But a terrified Death never returns to the soldier.
Eventually the soldier grows old and weary himself.
But without Death he can’t die. He can’t go upstairs to Heaven, and Hell down below is terrified of him.
So now the soldier is forever trapped in his own hell on earth.
It’s a fanciful tale. But one you can apply to your marketing ASAP.
Sometimes things get so bad that people just want Death to shake their hand.
They might be ‘Deathseekers’.
But they might surprise you…
Because it’s not death they truly want.
What these suffering people want is ESCAPE.
You see good (and bad) writers throw this into their copy all the time.
Whether you see sales pages for people who want to escape their stabbing back pain… escape their 9 to 5 prison… or escape the slums they’ve fallen into…
The deep theme of escape shows up a lot.
If things get so bad for someone that he or she will do anything to escape…
That’s when you tap them on the shoulder and offer salvation.
Because I’d bet a barrel of gold:
If people have to choose between death to escape their problems…
Or cling to the hope that you offer…
Most people will yearn for your non-lethal option first.
Do it right and you can make crazy Scrooge McDuck levels of cash that way.
Which reminds me…
