Here’s a handy quote:
“People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.” – Samuel Johnson
Now… I’ve had a couple of stupid moments in my life.
(I don’t look forward to my third.)
It was the same mistake twice:
I natter away on my phone.
My head swivels the room like a haunted doll as I wonder where my phone is…
Then I remember the phone I’m looking for…
Is already in my hand mushed up against my face.
*facepalm*
But if you can take something smart from my stupidity…
Take this:
When you market to customers…
Feel free to say the bleedin’ obvious sometimes.
We’re a pitiful species. We forget simple truths.
So do your customer a huge favour… and say it again.
Each person on your mailing list has a thousand things buzzing in their mind through the day.
Poke them.
Remind them what your offer is… why it’s better… what the deadline is…
Repeat repeat and repeat some more.
Loop it like your favourite pop-song.
Even if you think your message is obvious to your customer by now….
Chances are you’ve caught them the moment they forget your magical life-changing offer.
So tell ‘em again.
Don’t let them miss out on giving you money.
That’s why you see big-shot marketers bang on and on about how ‘relentless marketing’ is the MORAL thing to do.
BUT BEWARE…
Do it wrong and you burn out your list with flaming piles of spam.
You teach your list to HATE you.
They’ll take their angry pitchforks and stab the ‘Unsubscribe’ button at you.
(Pro tip: Use the butt-end of the pitchfork to mash buttons. Not the stabby end.)
But build your list well…
Dangle a killer offer in front of them…
And each ‘obvious’ fact you repeat becomes a priestly blessing to them.
Why do you think sermons/gurus/talking-heads repeat stuff so often?
Likewise…
Think of all the life-changing lessons you’ve forgotten.
Only for someone to remind, re-zap, and reignite you later.
Pay it forward.
Say the obvious.
Bake that into your next marketing brownie.
See whether your sales spike this year.
