Disney likes to take out the fun gruesome bits of fairy tales.
The Little Mermaid dies at the end of her original story… Peter Pan features dead kids…O.G. Pinocchio even steps on Jiminy Cricket and kills him…
And Disney takes out Zeus’ affair in their hit-film Hercules.
If you were a fan of Greek myths growing up like a normal kid…
You’d know that thunder-god Zeus seduces mortal Alcmene who gives birth to the half-god Hercules.
Zeus’ wife, Hera, ain’t impressed with her husband’s infidelity and tortures Hercules’ the rest of his life.
Heck, she even tricks Hercules into murdering his own family.
But you know what Disney did?
They snuffed out the affair.
Instead they Disneyfied it.
Made it kid-friendly.
Disney made Hercules a full-on god and legitimate son of both Zeus AND Hera.
A wholesome happy family.
Until zany villain Hades kidnaps baby Hercules from Mt Olympus, drains away his powers, and strands him on earth.
The rest of the film is basically Hercules getting back his powers, his god-hood, and his identity.
And on the way he finds love, courage, character development, and all that yadda yadda along the way.
But here’s the thing…
Hercules spent YEARS doing nothing to get his godhood back.
He grew up with no idea of who he really was.
It’s only when his dad Zeus tells Hercules HE WAS ONCE A GOD…
That Hercules springs to action to get his powers and his identity back.
And it’s the same with your customers.
Do what Disney did to Hercules.
Make your customers feel like they’ve lost something.
Something they once had.
Psychology says we care more about things we’ve lost than things we never had.
It’s a funny human quirk.
One you can use in your marketing.
So if you’re looking for another sales angle…
Then show your customer what they lost.
Make them feel the pain of loss
Then show how your business gets it back for them.
Something they crave.
Identity. Money. Love. Power. Health. Time. Happiness. etc.
Get ‘em hurtin’.
Get ‘em angry.
Get ‘em pining after what they once had.
Make them want to hand their cash to YOU for a ‘refund’ on their fate.
Where you give ‘em back something precious that slipped through their fingers.
Because they DESERVE to get it back dammit.
And you’re the one to help them to fight and claw it back. Tooth and nail.
